The magazine described “Underground Festivals” as events that “may fly under the radar, but not for long.”

Rooster Walk, set for May 23-26 at Blue Mountain Festival Grounds, beat out festivals from states such as Georgia, Ohio and North Carolina to earn the honor.

“Organizers host this growing event at the Blue Mountain Festival Grounds to commemorate the lives of two lost friends,” stated the magazine article. “If you find huge crowds to be a drag, consider this low-key weekend that features an impressive line-up of roots music held in the scenic foothills of Martinsville—a former furniture mecca making a comeback through arts and outdoor rec.”

Leftover Salmon and Ivan Neville’s Dumpstaphunk will headline the May 23rd-26th festival, which is a charity event that successfully straddles the line between family-friendly fun and full-on party.

Other notable bands on the lineup include Yarn (two nights), Larry Keel & Sammy Shelor, Kung Fu, Dangermuffin, Sister Sparrow & the Dirty Birds as well as Josh Panda & the Hot Damned. Annual fan favorites Sanctum Sully, Lizzy Ross and the Kings of Belmont are also back for RW5. CLICK HERE for a full list of bands playing Rooster Walk.

RW5 takes place at the idyllic Blue Mountain Festival Grounds near Martinsville, Va. A full slate of arts, crafts and food vendors, as well as children’s activities, the Tuff Strutter 5K footrace, a disc golf course and workshop events are scheduled for the fifth annual festival, which has donated $20,000 to a scholarship fund at nearby Martinsville High School in its first four years.

Online tickets are available HERE. Volunteers are still needed for the festival, which drew more than 3,000 people last year. In exchange for two, six-hour shifts, volunteers will receive a free weekend pass to the festival. For more information on volunteering, CLICK HERE.

Kung Fu is quickly popularizing their unique sonic contribution “NU-SION,” which blurs the line between intense electro-fusion and blistering dance arrangements. Making funk fusion music “cool” again, the band draws on influences such as early Headhunters, Weather Report & Mahavishnu Orchestra, merging those ideas with technical fireworks and a contemporary EDM-informed sensibility. Kung Fu will play at RW5 on Friday night (May 24th).

<img class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-1814" alt="StephaneWrembel.2013. Wrembel, who won a Grammy for his song Bistro Fada – the theme to Woody Allen’s Academy Award winning movie, Midnight in Paris, will also perform an on-stage set Sunday (May 26th).

Funk Punch will return to Rooster Walk after making their RW debut last year. The Roanoke-based jam band brings a variety of musical influences to the table and has built a strong following in the region.

Tara Mills will perform with her band, Yankee Dixie. A singer/songwriter based in Charlottesville, Tara has quickly become one of Cville’s hottest young acts. This will be her first performance at Blue Mountain Festival Grounds.

Rooster Walk 5 will take place May 23-26 at Blue Mountain, which is located in the rolling foothills just outside of Martinsville, Va. The festival already features headlining acts Leftover Salmon, Ivan Neville’s Dumpstaphunk, two nights of Yarn, plus Sister Sparrow & the Dirty Birds and a very special set featuring bluegrass legends Larry Keel and Sammy Shelor on the same stage.
Formed in Boulder, Colo., at the end of 1989, Leftover Salmon was one of the first bluegrass bands to add drums and tour rock & roll bars, helping them become a pillar of the jam band scene and unwitting architects of the jam grass genre. They have performed all over the world, headlined huge festivals such as Telluride, and their up-tempo, rocking, partygrass stylings have made them festival favorites with all ages for decades.

The band features legendary musical figures Vince Herman on guitar and Drew Emmitt on mandolin, as well as a more recent addition: Chapel Hill, N.C.’s Andy Thorn on banjo.

Ivan Neville’s Dumpstaphunk offers fans an unforgettable live experience steeped in the “Big Easy” tradition of a good time. The all-star collective features Ivan Neville on keys, the unique double-bass attack of veterans Tony Hall and Nick Daniels, Ian Neville on guitar, and the monster addition of Nikki Glaspie on drums.

Ivan Neville’s Dumpstaphunk at Rooster Walk 5!

From annual performances at New Orleans’ Jazz Fest to an aggressive touring schedule with noteworthy appearances at Bonnaroo, Wakarusa, Hangout, All Good, High Sierra, VoodooExperience, Bear Creek, Gathering of the Vibes, Wanee and Jam Cruise to name a few, Dumpstaphunk continue to redefine their genre with a signature groove that dares listeners not to move.

These two bands top off what was already Rooster Walk’s strongest lineup ever. Yarn will perform two nights, while great acts like Larry Keel & Sammy Shelor, Sister Sparrow & the Dirty Birds, Dangermuffin, Josh Panda & the Hot Damned, Lizzy Ross, Sanctum Sully and more will also perform. For a full list of bands playing at the festival, click here.

Rooster Walk 5 will occur at Blue Mountain Festival Grounds in the rolling countryside near Martinsville, Va.

The Turn 5 Concert Series held Friday and Saturday near Martinsville Speedway raised approximately $18,000 for charity.

Nearly 1,000 fans came out over the weekend to hear performances by country legend John Anderson and Nashville up-and-comer Jaida Dreyer. Area bands Fatz, Rebel Guns, Broken Glass and Montana Young and Dean Smith also played on the outdoor stage located on Clover Road.

Organizers of the Rooster Walk Music and Arts Festival put on the event, which pledged to donate 50 percent of proceeds to the Virginia Wounded Warrior Program, and 25 percent each to the pole winner’s charity of choice and Carlisle School, which held race-weekend rights to the property where the concert took place.

Therefore, $9,000 will be donated to the Virginia Wounded Warrior Program; $4,5oo will go to the Jimmie Johnson Foundation; and $4,500 will be given to Carlisle School.

William Baptist, a co-founder of Rooster Walk, presented the Wounded Warrior check to legendary Marines snipers Chuck Mawhinney and Bob Depp during pre-race festivities Sunday at Martinsville Speedway. Baptist also made a check presentation to Jimmie Johnson before the race. Both presentations took place on the track just before the start of the TUMS Fast Relief 500.

The concerts were made possible through the generous support of more than a dozen area businesses. Festival sponsors included: Bassett Furniture; Carter Bank & Trust; Martinsville Speedway; Taco Bell; Averett University; 103.3 WAKG radio; Frith Construction; Miller Lite; Blue Ridge Aquaculture; the law firm of Gardner, Barrow, Sharpe & Reynolds, PC; Checkered Flag Sports; Lester Building Supply; Scott & Stringfellow; BB&T; Morgan Stanley Smith Barney; West Window Corporation; Daniel’s of Eden; and State Farm Insurance agent Chip Wyatt.
